“Shout and be glad, Daughter Zion. For I am coming, and I will live among you,” declares the LORD. – Zechariah 2:10
From the very beginning, God’s greatest desire has been to dwell among His people.
The story of Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation, reveals one continuous theme: God longs not merely to visit us, but to live among us: in our midst, in our hearts, and even in our homes.
Eden: God’s Presence in the Beginning
In the Garden of Eden, humans’ first home, God walked with man in perfect fellowship (Genesis 3:8). It was not simply a garden of beauty, but a sanctuary of presence.
The Wilderness: God in the Midst of His People
When Israel journeyed through the wilderness, God reaffirmed His longing to be at the centre of His people’s lives.
“Let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them.” — Exodus 25:8
He instructed that His tabernacle be placed in the midst of the camp, surrounded by the tribes — a visible sign that His presence was central to their identity and purpose.
“For the LORD your God walks in the midst of your camp, to deliver you.” — Deuteronomy 23:14
But when the people sinned and rebelled, Moses took the tent of meeting and pitched it outside the camp (Exodus 33:7). God did not command this; it was the Prophet Moses who did it.
Generations later, when David longed to build a house for God, the Lord reminded him:
“I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as My dwelling.” — 2 Samuel 7:6
What a picture of an unlimited love – the eternal God, content to move with His people wherever they went.
